The second batch of 20 titles has just been released from Bello, Pan Macmillan's digital and print-on-demand imprint which brings out-of-print and 'lost classics' back to life.
Following from the ten titles released in December, we are thrilled to include further four of Gerald Durrell’s collections of autobiographical tales: The New Noah, Two In The Bush, Fillets of Plaice and Marrying Off Mother. Another treat is Durrell’s first novel, Rosy Is My Relative, featuring an elephant with a taste for liquor and the chaos that ensues when an unsuspecting young man inherits her.
Another author making a welcome return is Pamela Hansford Johnson, with five titles included in this release. The Good Listener, along with its sequel The Good Husband, follow the life and loves of Toby Roberts, while Cork Street, Next To The Hatter’s has the intriguing description ‘A Novel in Bad Taste’. Also published are Too Dear For My Possessing, the first title in Johnson’s ‘Helena’ Trilogy, and The Holiday Friend. Seven more titles by Pamela Hansford Johnson will be published in the coming months, including An Avenue of Stone, also in the ‘Helena’ Trilogy, and A Bonfire, her final novel which was published the year of her death.
Two distinguished crime writers are added to the Bello fold with this release – David Williams and Francis Durbridge. The five Williams books in this collection feature his merchant banker and amateur sleuth, Mark Treasure, who featured in 17 of Williams’ books: Wedding Treasure, Murder In Advent, Divided Treasure, Treasure In Oxford and Holy Treasure! More titles featuring Mark Treasure will follow in later releases, including Murder For Treasure, short-listed for the 1980 Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger Award.
The classic Francis Durbridge thrillers have also been brought back to life. While best recalled as a writer for screen and radio, and particularly for creating the character Paul Temple, Durbridge also wrote a number of novels, five of which have just been published: The Desperate People, My Wife Melissa (the basis for the 1970s TV series), The Passenger, The Pig-Tail Murder and A Game of Murder.
Bello was launched in partnership with Curtis Brown, one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious literary agencies, and is now looking to work with other agents to bring their backlist back to life. The imprint is designed to bring long out of print books by iconic authors to a new readership in the 21st century.
