Publishing information about Gone with the Wind

US Editions

Gone With the Wind was first published by Macmillan New York in June 1936.  There were several printings in 1936 and In America alone by Dec 31 1936 they had sold 855,000.  It has also been reported that over 1 million were sold worldwide by the end of 1936.

At the time Macmillan New York was part of the UK company, Macmillan & Co Ltd, but in 1951 the New York company was sold and became an entirely separate company most of which is now owned by Simon & Schuster.  We therefore do not have any printing records for the New York Company only for the UK printings.  If you are interested in the first printings of the US edition you will need either to contact Simon & Schuster www.simonsays.com or the archives of Macmillan New York which are held in the New York Public Library.

Various books have been written about Gone With the Wind and there is a great interest in the book printings amongst book collectors.  Alternatively you could contact the Gone With the Wind website www.gwtw.org which is based at the museum in Atlanta.

UK printings

Gone With the Wind also first published in the UK in 1936 by Macmillan & Co, Ltd London, who at the time was the parent company to the Macmillan Company of New York.

The first copies sold in the UK were imported from the States.  The first UK printing was in July 1936 by Lowe & Brydone, 3000 were printed, and there were 3 further printings in 1936.  The L & B printings had 1037 pages and the spelling is American e.g. demeanor on the first page.  At some stage (our records don't show when) UK printing was transferred to Richard Clay (765 pages and English spelling 'demeanour').

Gone With the Wind (ISBN: 9780330323499) is still published in the UK by Pan Macmillan (part of Macmillan Publishers Ltd).
