It’s been going on for what feels like years. It doesn’t end; the end doesn’t even seem to get closer. The middle stretches on and on, the pages still pile vertiginously high, a cliff face remaining to be scaled. I want to move on but I can’t. Yes, I’m stuck in the middle of a doorstopper, again, and despite grappling with the beast, I haven’t managed to tame it.

The build-up to Christmas seems to start earlier every year. Usually I am incredibly annoyed by this and find myself shouting at signs outside pubs (‘Christmas party? We haven’t even had Hallowe’en yet!’) and at displays in the supermarket (‘Puddings? Crackers? It’s not for two months. Two months!’).
