Open, a colourful guide to life for young adults from TV and radio personality, journalist and teen ambassador Gemma Cairney will be published March 2017.

Publishing in hardback on International Women’s Day – Wednesday 8th March 2017 – Open: A Toolkit for How Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be gives honest advice about everything from mental health and body image to families and first love, and everything in between. Rookie illustrator Maria-Ines Gul provides the imagery for this big, bright and beautiful book.

Gemma says,

‘As a communicator who believes in approaching life with an open heart and opening up big and important conversations, to write this book is a dream come true. This will be a life-resource book, a toolkit of the big, brilliant and bad stuff that happens to nearly all of us. Through personal insight, beautiful imagery and expert advice, I want to offer hope and a huge comforting cuddle to young people questioning what life’s all about or dealing with hard times. Pan Macmillan shared my vision from the start, so I’m thrilled that they have opened their doors to me to be my publishing home.’
Rachel Petty, 6+ Editorial Director at Macmillan Children’s Books, adds,

‘We are so pleased to be working with Gemma. She is absolutely the right person to speak out on tricky issues that most people wouldn’t dare to address. Gemma’s warmth, passion and energy all shine through in her book – it will be a shoulder to lean on, a listening ear and an inspiration in times of worry for young people everywhere.’
Pan Macmillan is supporting the publication of Open: A Toolkit for how Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be with an all-encompassing bold and innovative communications campaign; perfectly tailored activity for all accounts, libraries and schools alongside a comprehensive advertising campaign and blanket press coverage.

An exclusive Open-topped double-decker bus will be on tour in the UK in 2017, throwing open its doors in school yards, university campuses, town centres, housing estates and festival sites, inviting young people to come and talk to Gemma.

Gemma Cairney will be at the Young Adult Literature Convention (YALC) on Sunday 31st July, where she is chairing an ‘Ask YALC’ panel with Holly Bourne, Juno Dawson, Rosalind Jana and TV’s Dr Christian. On Monday 1st August 2016, Gemma continues to make a colourful announcement splash with Twitter HQ, where will be inviting her fans to #OpenTheBook between 7 & 8 p.m. GMT.
