We are delighted to announce that we will be publishing an astonishing new teen novel, The State of Grace by Rachael Lucas in early 2017.

The State of Grace is a whip-smart and unapologetically honest story of a teenage girl with Asperger’s who deals with everything life throws at her: from the usual teenage stresses of family troubles and first love, to the daily trial of trying hard to pretend to be ‘normal’ – in some ways, just like every other teenager strives to do.  Fifteen-year-old Grace is funny and plain-spoken. Just because she is autistic doesn’t mean she’s great at maths (she’s not) or can draw the Eiffel Tower from memory (she can’t).  But like any teenager, Grace just wants to fit in.

Rachel Petty, Editorial Director for Over 6s at Macmillan Children’s Books bought world rights for two novels by Rachael Lucas in a pre-emptive deal with Amanda Preston at LBA just hours before the start of the 2016 Bologna Book Fair.
The first novel, The State of Grace, is now internationally read and widely acclaimed. In less than two months since the Book Fair, international deals have been confirmed with Albin Michel in France and with Feiwel and Friends at Macmillan in the USA. There is significant interest in Spain, Turkey and Brazil.
Rachel Petty says,

'Every so often as an editor you fall so crazily in love with a book that you’ll stop at nothing to publish it – this is one of those books for me. It’s honest, real and special – I absolutely love the authentic voice and I feel like I’ve known Grace forever.'
Rachael Lucas is an author, coach and freelance writer. Her debut novel Sealed with a Kiss was downloaded over 130,000 times on Kindle and was a bestseller. Now published by Pan Macmillan, the first part of her new novel, Wildflower Bay, published in ebook last week on 19th May. Rachael lives and works in a Victorian house by the seaside in the North West of England with her partner and her four children. Her daughter was recently diagnosed with Asperger’s (ASD), and following this, so was she.

She says,

'I have written Grace for all the girls on the spectrum out there, and their mothers, and the families who wonder what Aspergers is like from the inside. It’s about how it feels to follow the rules when the rules don’t make any sense at all, in a life that is brilliant, funny, challenging, chaotic and sometimes just too much.'

The State of Grace
will publish in the UK in early 2017, followed by a second novel in 2018.
