We are overjoyed to announce that There Is a Tribe of Kids by Lane Smith has won the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal 2017.

Previous winners include Raymond Briggs, Shirley Hughes and former Children's Laureates Quentin Blake, Anthony Browne and Chris Riddell, as well as Two Hoots’ own Emily Gravett.

Lane had this to say about his win:

Winning the Kate Greenaway is a dream come true. If you could see my studio you would see a work space filled with books by Lucy Cousins, John Burningham, Anthony Browne, Mini Grey, Raymond Briggs, Quentin Blake . . . so to be acknowledged from the land of many of my favourite illustrators is an enormous honour.

There Is a Tribe of Kids is unlike any other picture book – it’s a playful celebration of the natural world, the joy of childhood and collective nouns all at once. We follow a child’s journey through the natural world, cavorting with a turn of turtles, a smack of jellyfish and an unkindness of ravens.

Lane Smith’s artwork is rich with detail and humour, and we could not be more pleased that he has been recognized by this prestigious award.

We were so proud to have two books out of eight on the shortlist, with Tidy by Emily Gravett shortlisted. It is so exciting to discover that Lane has won!
