The detective
Van Veeteren is the star of Hakan Nesser’s million copy bestselling crime series. A former Chief Inspector, Van Veeteren is now retired, recently divorced and has two grown up children. He is an expert in reading people’s motives and his intuition puts him on a par with Rebus, Morse and Maigret. He has only one unsolved case - The G File.

The case
In 1987 Private Investigator Verlangan is hired by a woman to follow her husband Jaan 'G' Hennan. A few days later, his client is found dead at the bottom of an empty swimming pool.

Chief Inspector Van Veeteren leads the investigation into the case. As more information emerges about G's shadowy past, the Chief Inspector becomes more desperate than ever to convict him. But G has a solid alibi - and no one else can be found in relation to the crime.

Fifteen years later. When Verlangan's daughter reports the private detective missing, Van Veeteren returns to Maardam CID once more. For all Verlangan left behind was a cryptic note; and a telephone message in which he claimed to have finally discovered the proof of G's murderous past...

The villain
Van Veeteren has encountered Jaan 'G' Hennan before and is his fiercest adversary. On the outside ‘G’ has it all, he is handsome, successful and charming. But appearances can be deceptive and his dark past includes bullying, abuse and a love of casual cruelty.
