Hannah Kent's astounding novel Burial Rites, based on the true story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland, has won Literary Fiction Book of the Year at the Australian Bookseller Industry Awards and the Nielsen BookData Booksellers Choice Award at the Australian Bookseller Awards.
The novel beat Richard Flanagan, Fiona McFarlane, Christos Tsiolkas and Picador's own Tim Winton to win the Literary Fiction award. The Booksellers' Choice Award is given to a newly released Australian book that booksellers most enjoyed reading, marketing and handselling during the previous year.
Burial Rites is also shortlisted for the Baileys Prize for Women's Fiction. The winner will be announced on 4 June 2014.
