Beautiful books to read this Autumn

13 September 2016

There's something for everyone in our latest set of beautiful classic books.

Charles Dickens is the master of Victorian literature and we’ve just published eight of his best loved books all enhanced with period illustrations: Hard Times, Ghost Stories, The Pickwick Papers, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities.

And, from an equally famous American writer, F Scott Fitzgerald, we have stylish new editions of The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night, The Beautiful and the Damned and Tales of the Jazz Age.
There are eight very appealing new additions to Macmillan Collector’s Library available this month;

The children's classic, The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall

English Fairy Tales by Flora Annie Steel with gorgeous illustrations by Arthur Rackham

The Travels of Ibn Battutah – discover Ibn Battutah's epic medieval journey in this excellent version edited by Tim Macintosh Smith

Many books owe their enduring popularity to much loved stage, film and television adaptations and this is certainly true of three of our new books;

Born Free by Joy Adamson with an hugely entertaining new introduction by John Rendall

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo with an enlightening new introduction by acclaimed writer and journalist Paul Bailey

The Way Through the Woods by Colin Dexter who has had an astonishing three long running television series – Morse, Lewis and Endeavour - based on his Inspector Morse novels.

Diary of a Provincial Lady by E. M Delafield - talking of films, the new Bridget Jones movie is about to hit our screens.  Well long before Bridget came to life on screen and in print, Diary of a Provincial Lady was published in 1930 and it’s just as funny.
The Odyssey by Homer - no classics list is complete without it.
