Pan Macmillan to publish non-fiction debut, The Adventures of Maud West, Lady Detective from bookseller Susannah Stapleton, first pitched at London Book Fair 2016.
Pan Macmillan has acquired UK & Commonwealth rights at auction. Susannah signed with her agent, Tim Bates at Peters, Fraser & Dunlop, after she pitched her idea for the book at The Write Stuff panel event at the LBF in 2016.
In the book, to be published early in 2019, Stapleton explores the curious life and career of Maud West, who opened her London detective agency in 1905 and sleuthed on behalf of society’s finest for more than thirty years.
She was a flagrant self-publicist, but behind her public persona lay a very different story. Susannah Stapleton’s book will interweave tales from Maud West’s own ‘casebook’ with social history and extensive original research and will uncover not only the reality of life as a female private detective in the Golden Age of Crime, but the extraordinary true story behind the marvellous Maud.
Georgina Morley, Editorial Director Non-Fiction, said:
'I’ve never known a proposal elicit quite such shrieks of joy from my colleagues. Maud’s story is really quite extraordinary and will appeal to readers who love Dorothy L. Sayers – who has a walk-on part in the story – and Agatha Christie. It’s bliss and I can’t wait to read Susannah’s completed manuscript.'
Susannah Stapleton said:
'I’m thrilled that Maud West has found such a wonderful home at Macmillan. The team’s enthusiasm for Maud is hugely gratifying, and the chance to work with an editor of George’s calibre is beyond anything that I had imagined as a debut writer.'
The Adventures of Maud West, Lady Detective by Susannah Stapleton will be published by Pan Macmillan in 2019.
