Friday Poem: 'And as we followed dinosaurs'

29 December 2017

By

A Friday poem from Kate Tempest's Hold Your Own.

Whatever follows us
Will hunt for footprints in the lowlands,
And piece together fragments of our habits
From the internet.

A fossilised smartphone preserved behind glass
For the new young to traipse past on school trips,
Yawning.

Hold Your Own, the 2014 collection from Ted Hughes award-winning poet Kate Tempest, is multi-voiced work based around the mythical figure of Tiresias. In Hold Your Own, Tempest holds up a mirror to contemporary life in a direct and provocative way rarely associated with poetry.
