We all like to think we're models of politeness and good humour when it comes to social media. But sometimes it goes wrong and, behind the safety of our computer screens or smartphones, we say or do something we'd never dream of saying or doing in person. It might be in response to a misguided joke (think of Justine Sacco's tweet, or MP Emily Thornberry's), but as Jon Ronson shows in his book So You've Been Publicly Shamed, the effect this shaming has on their lives might not always be worth it.
