HBO recently announced that Game of Thrones is their biggest show to date, and we, like everyone else, cannot get enough.  Bereft after the season finale, we don’t know what to do with ourselves without Game of Thrones Mondays and “lets talk about what happened in Game of Thrones” Tuesdays.  With over a year to wait until Season Five, we asked you for your best TV/DVD recommendations.  We’ve picked our top five below. Will any of them challenge the Iron Throne? And do they have dragons in them?

1. Penny Dreadful

What is it?
A horror series created by Showtime set in Victorian London and featuring a cast of characters from the fiction of the time including Mina Harker, Dorian Gray and Frankenstein (and his monster).  The title refers to the Victorian penny dreadfuls, a type of tabloid style British fiction filled with lurid and sensational subject matter.  Penny Dreadful stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green and has already been commissioned for a second series.

2. Defiance

What is it?
A science fiction series set in the near future, where Earth has been all-but-destroyed after a war with aliens. Character Joshua Nolan works as the lawman for the town of Defiance, a community where humans and intelligent extraterrestrial species coexist. There is also a video game of the same name tied to the series.

Where can I watch it?
Series one is available as a boxset and series two returns to SyFy in September 2014.  Find out more here.

Aliens, yes. Dragons, no.

3. The Hollow Crown

What is it?
If you love the politics of Game of Thrones, you will love The Hollow Crown, a TV mini series based on William Shakespeare's History Plays. The series stars a stellar lineup of British acting talent including Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston and more dastardly deeds than you can shake a stick at.

Where can I watch it?
Available as a boxset, and the conclusion to the series airs on BBC in 2016 (and will star Benedict Cumberbatch!).

Does it have dragons in it?
Zounds! Definitely not.

4. Continuum

What is it?
Time travel, HELL YEAH! A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future. 

Where can I watch it?
Thursdays on Sy Fy

Does it have dragons in it?
No.

5. Grimm

What is it?
A modern twist on the Grimm brother’s tales. A homicide detective discovers he is a descendant of hunters who fight supernatural forces, and fights criminals he once thought were only found in fairy tales.

Where can I watch it?
First two seasons on boxset and season 3 is airing on Watch.

Does it have dragons in it?
Blutbads, Hexenbiests and other beasties yes. But no dragons. YET.
