Hub Talks: The Stranger On The Bridge

Join us for an in conversation event with Jonny Benjamin talking about #TheStrangerOnTheBridge, mental health, Jonny’s 5 Point Manifesto For Change. " " " "In 2008, a young man called Jonny Benjamin stood on Waterloo Bridge, about to jump. A stranger saw his distress and stopped to talk to him – a decision that saved Jonny’s life. " " " "Fast forward to 2014 and Jonny, together with Rethink Mental Illness, launched the #findmike campaign to find the stranger who put him on the path to recovery. More than 319 million people around the world followed the search until that mystery man, Neil Laybourn, was found, and the pair re-united. " " " "The Stranger on the Bridge is the story of Jonny’s tumultuous journey from childhood to the present day; from his diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder to that fateful day on the bridge and beyond. Jonny’s life was saved by the kindness of a stranger that day, but this was just the start of his story. He began to make and upload videos to YouTube to help explain his own experiences and from there began campaigning and working with mental health charities to raise awareness of mental health issues and suicide prevention. Alongside Neil, Jonny now travels the globe speaking in schools, businesses and prisons and in 2017 they ran the London Marathon together in support of Heads Together. Jonny was recently awarded an MBE for his campaigning work. " " " "Using deeply personal and emotional extracts from Jonny’s diary alongside his thoughts and memories, The Stranger on the Bridge is a unique and inspirational story. However, this is not just a personal testimony, The Stranger on the Bridge is also an active call to arms showing us how far we have come in terms of awareness and sensitivity around mental health issues whilst highlighting how much more needs to be done to create true parity between mental and physical health provision in the UK.
