Jonny Benjamin in conversation with Bryony Gordon

Jonny Benjamin MBE will be joining us in store with journalist, Bryony Gordon to discuss The Stranger on the Bridge, Jonny’s personal experiences and campaigning work, and the dialogues around mental health today. " " " " " " " "In 2008, Jonny Benjamin stood on Waterloo Bridge, about to jump. A stranger saw his distress and stopped to talk to him – a decision that saved Jonny’s life. In 2014, Jonny, together with Rethink Mental Illness, launched #findmike, a campaign to find the stranger who put Jonny on the path to recovery. Neil Laybourn was found with the help of more than 319 million people around the world, and the pair reunited. " " " " " " " "The Stranger on the Bridge recounts Jonny’s journey, from his diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, to that fateful day on Waterloo Bridge, and beyond, to his engagement in campaigning and working with mental health charities. From uploading videos to YouTube of his own experiences, Jonny has gone on to travel the world, with Neil, to speak in schools, businesses and prisons. In 2017 they ran the London Marathon together in support of Heads Together, and Jonny has recently been awarded an MBE for his campaigning work. " " " " " " " "Unique and inspirational, The Stranger on the Bridge is more than a personal testimony: it is an active call to arms, showing us how far we have come in terms of awareness and sensitivity around mental health issues, whilst also highlighting what more needs to be done to create true parity between mental and physical health provision in the UK. " " " " " " " "This event will be chaired by Bryony Gordon. In the 18 years that she has worked for the Telegraph, Bryony has become one of the paper's best-loved writers.
