Sally Carson
Sylvia Carson (1902-1941), known as Sally, was born in Dorset and spent her early life there. She had two sisters and the family was brought up by their widowed mother. Carson worked as a dance teacher and a publisher’s reader. She regularly holidayed in Bavaria, where Crooked Cross and The Prisoner are set. In 1938 she married publisher Eric Humphries, and they had three children. She died aged 38 of breast cancer.
