The End We Start From film rights acquired
The End We Start From by Megan Hunter publishes today in hardback, and we are thrilled to announce that the rights have been acquired for film by Benedict Cumberbatch's production company, SunnyMarch, and Hera Pictures.
The End We Start From film will be produced by Adam Ackland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sophie Hunter and Liza Marshall.
Benedict Cumberbatch, SunnyMarch co-founder and Sherlock actor, says: “The End We Start From is a stunning tale of motherhood. Megan has crafted a striking and frighteningly real story of a family fighting for survival that will make everyone stop and think about what kind of planet we are leaving behind for our children. We’re beyond thrilled to be bringing this story to life.”
Liza Marshall, Hera Pictures founder, says: “This exquisite piece of writing is profoundly moving. It captures the deep love between a mother and child while forcing us all to consider what the world could become if climate change destabilised everything we take for granted. Megan has written something very special and unique and we’re excited and honoured to have the opportunity to make it into a film.”
Megan Hunter, author, says: “I am absolutely delighted that such a talented, passionate and dynamic team will be working together to create a film version of The End We Start From. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see my work translated into a new medium, particularly by a group of people with such a heartfelt appreciation of the book. I can’t wait to see what emerges from this exciting collaboration.”
About the book:
In the midst of a mysterious environmental crisis, as London is submerged below flood waters, a woman gives birth to her first child, Z.
Days later, the family are forced to leave their home in search of safety. As they move from place to place, shelter to shelter, their journey traces both fear and wonder as Z's small fists grasp at the things he sees, as he grows and stretches, thriving and content against all the odds.
This is a story of new motherhood in a terrifying setting: a familiar world made dangerous and unstable, its people forced to become refugees. The End We Start From is a gripping novel that paints an imagined future as realistic as it is frightening. And yet, though the country is falling apart around them, this family's world - of new life and new hope - sings with love.
