Four Pan Macmillan authors named in Esquire’s inaugural Better Men list

Pan Macmillan is proud to recognise four of our esteemed authors, Sir Alan Hollinghurst, Patrick Radden Keefe, Douglas Stuart and Louis Theroux who have been selected for Esquire’s first ever Better Men List 2025.

This recognition is a tremendous tribute to the cultural impact and literary excellence championed by these fantastic authors.

The list, which celebrates "Certified Good Guys Defining Positive Masculinity," honours leading figures who are setting a standard for being "kind, engaged, active" role models and leaders in thought, style, and creativity.

The Authors and Their Recognition:

  • Sir Alan Hollinghurst: ‘The Legend’
    • Recognised for his exquisite prose and for bringing "engrossing narratives about gay life into the literary mainstream" with works like the Booker Prize-winning The Line of Beauty. His latest novel, Our Evenings, is praised by Esquire as ‘a thing of such balance, lyricism and queer poignancy that it should be put on the national curriculum’.
  • Patrick Radden Keefe: ‘The Investigator’
    • Celebrated for his long-form narrative non-fiction, including Rogues and Empire of Pain. His work is recognised for its ability to illuminate injustices and change the world for the better.
  • Douglas Stuart: ‘The Confessor’
    • Honoured for his extraordinary journey and the creation of the beautiful and devastating Shuggie Bain, another Booker Prize winner. His next book with Picador John of John is set to publish next year.
  • Louis Theroux: ‘The Investigator’
    •  Selected for his "consistent and insightful journalistic voice." His career, spanning decades of celebrated television series, podcasts, and books through Pan is rightfully celebrated.

We warmly congratulate Sir Alan Hollinghurst, Patrick Radden Keefe, Douglas Stuart and Louis Theroux on this prestigious achievement.
