Milly-Molly-Mandy: a guide

Looking to revel in some nostalgia, or introduce new readers to these enduringly popular stories? Our guide to the Milly-Molly-Mandy books is here to help.

2025 marks the one hundredth anniversary of Milly-Molly-Mandy's first appearance in print. Initially a feature in the magazine Christian Science Monitor, the stories went on to be published in book form, the first volume in 1928, and have been delighting readers ever since.

Milly-Molly-Mandy (full name Millicent Margaret Amanda) lives in a small English village with her family. Her adventures are charmingly low stakes – although perhaps not to Milly-Molly-Mandy! – with tales of trips to the seaside, concerts and picnics, and her friends Billy Blunt and Little-Friend-Susan. Simple yet captivating, each story offers a glimpse into a slower, more connected way of life. Joyce Lankester Brisley, who was also an accomplished illustrator, created both the stories and the accompanying drawings, which perfectly complement the gentle, heartwarming tone of the books. The stories are perfect for reading to children aged five and up, or for slightly older independent readers.
