    Makes 12-16

  • Ingredients
    • 250g plain flour
    • 120g cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
    • 2 heaped teaspoons icing sugar
    • Pinch of salt
    • Cold water
    • Fluted round cutters and a small heart cutter
    • Strawberry or raspberry jam
    • Bun baking tray
    • Cling film
    • Rolling pin
    • Butter knife
    • Wire cooling rack
  1. Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl. Add the icing sugar and a pinch of salt. Add the cubes of cold butter then rub the butter into the flour using your fingers.
  2. When the mixture has turned into fine crumbs, add two tablespoons of cold water and form the mixture into a doughy ball. You may need to add a little more water but make sure the pastry doesn't get too sticky.
  3. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. While the pastry cools, preheat the oven to 200 c /Gas Mark 6.
  4. Grease the bun tray with some butter. Sprinkle flour onto a clean work surface and a rolling pin.Take the chilled dough out of the cling film and roll it into a rectangle shape, until the dough is about 3-4mm thick.
  5. Use a round fluted cutter to cut enough circles for the baking tray. Each circle should fit into a tray hole with a slight overlap at the edges.
  6. Carefully lift the circles off the work surface using a butter knife and place them in the tray.
  7. Add a teaspoon of jam to each tart, being careful not to overfill them.
  8. Using the leftover pastry, cut out a heart for each tart with the small heart cutter and lay them on top of the jam centres.
  9. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes. The tarts will be ready when they are golden brown around the edges and the jam is bubbling slightly.

  • Ingredients
    • Two slices of brown bread per sandwich
    • Some thin slices of white bread
    • Sandwich fillings like egg ham or cheese
    • A large cookie cutter or a saucer about 10cm wide
    • A medium-sized cookie cutter about 6cm wide
    • Knife
    • Cheese slices
    • Orange pepper or carrot
    • Black olives or blueberries
    • Chives for decoration

Make a sandwich with the brown bread and your favourite filling.

Cut out a circle from the sandwich using the large cookie cutter, avoiding the crusts. If you don't have a large enough cutter, lay a saucer on the bread and ask an adult to cut round it. Place this circle on a plate. This is the cat's face.

Use a knife to cut off two corners from the leftover sandwich crusts. Pinch them into a triangular ear shape and place them on each side of the face.

Take the medium cookie cutter and cut out a circle from the white bread. Use the medium cutter again to cut out a curve from the side he circle. This is the cat's grin.

Cut small circles out of the cheese slices for eyes – the lid of a clean plastic drink bottle is a good size to work from. Slice a blueberry or an olive in half for the pupils. Make the nose by cutting out a small triangle of pepper or carrot, then arrange the chives like whiskers.
